The University of Southern Indiana will forfeit all of last seasons 27 victories due to five NCAA violations. This is a self-imposed penalty. Do self-imposed penalties lessen the severity of the penalties imposed by the NCAA?

Do self-imposed penalties lessen the severity of the penalties imposed by the NCAA? No expert here but I don't think self imposed penalties necessarily lessen any subsequent NCAA penalties but they obviously demonstrate to the NCAA the school is aware of the issue and its importance. I'd say in the end the penalty relates to the number of rules broken, times the rules were broken, the schools oversight of the program or lack thereof, and how severely the rules are broken. Again this is just my opinion.
