Sectional 9 – The Battle for the Region does not usually attract a lot of attention. This year is no different as only Hammond Morton appears to have been able to put together a decent season. Morton's only loss to 4A powerhouse Lowell and that game was highly competitive. However, an eye should be kept on Griffith, whose record may not be impressive but schedule is.
Sectional 10 – This sectional is loaded with at least five good teams competing for the championship. Plymouth would have to be considered as the favorite going in. The win over Concord indicates that the Pilgrims are loaded and should be considered as a very serious state final candidate. However, the path to the championship could not be any more difficult. For starters they must defeat perennial power Lowell. The Red Devils had a great regular season with only a one point loss to 5A Munster to mar their season. Last years match up between these two ended up in overtime and could possibly have the same outcome this year. The winner of this game must then face a South Bend Washington team that is only five points from an undefeated season including a two point loss to the top ranked 5A Penn. The winner of that game gets a very tough Concord in the final. This sectional is the best in this class if not in the entire tournament.
Sectional 11 – The Saints of Bishop Dwenger have had a surprising season considering all the players they lost from last years state runner-up team. They won the SAC with reasonable ease and now are primed for another run at Lucas Oil Stadium. The only team I can see that will test them in this sectional is East Noble. The Knights have had a solid season and seem to peak at playoff time each year.
Sectional 12 – The championship game appears to be the first round match up between Ft. Wayne South and Delta. The Eagles of Delta High have ran roughshod through their regular season schedule. However, they will face the best team they have lined up against all season when they host the Archers of Ft. Wayne Southside. Winners of eight straight after an opening night loss to Dwenger, the defense has not allowed double-figures since the third game of the season. Delta has not had a good history in match ups with Ft. Wayne teams but hope to change that this year.
Sectional 13 – New Palestine appears to be the class of this field as the Dragons have only two losses this season. Those losses came at the hands of two pretty good football teams, Delta and Batesville. Anderson Highland started strong but has faded lately and Mt. Vernon has had a decent season but it appears that this sectional is New Palestine's to lose.
Sectional 14 – Indianapolis Cathedral is the best team in Indiana. Indianapolis Cathedral is the best team in Indiana. Stated that twice to emphasize the point. I know that Roncalli, Mooresville and Plainfield have all had good seasons and in a normal year this would be a very competitive sectional, but as stated earlier Indianapolis Cathedral is the best team in Indiana.
Sectional 15 – No team was happier to see realignment than the East Central Trojans. Columbus East now plays in Class 5A so the Trojans season will not end with a loss to the Olympians. The Golden Bears of Shelbyville appear to be their biggest challenge but have not shown an ability to beat the better teams on their schedule, see Delta and and New Palestine.
Sectional 16 – The southern Indiana sectional promises to be very interesting as the Wildcats of Jasper High School have firmly established themselves as a state finalist contender. However, the road to Lucas Oil Stadium will be a difficult one as they will be challenged at every stop along the way. To start with the Wildcats must face a very good Northview team whose only loss was to 5A Terre North. If the Wildcats win this game, and they should, a Boonville team will most likely be awaiting in the second round. Jasper handled Boonville earlier in the season but teams must be wary of rematches in the playoffs. If Jasper survives, then unbeaten Evansville Reitz awaits in what surely will be as good as sectional championship games as there will be in the state.
