Here's my class 5A Sectional picks.
Class 5A, Sectional 1. Tough close Sectional. Crown Point takes home the crown.
Class 5A, Sectional 2. Two horse race here. I'll flip a coin and take Mishawaka over Penn in a close one.
Class 5A, Sectional 3. Looks like Snider and Homestead here as usual. But Kokomo could give Snider a tussle. I'll go with Snider. But they'll be tested by Kokomo and Homestead.
Class 5A, Sectional 4. Hamilton Southeastern makes it to the Sectional Championship Game than it's season is over. Carmel wins here without much trouble.
Class 5A, Sectional 5. Cake walk here. Warren Central with ease.
Class 5A, Sectional 6. Some pretty even above average teams here. Ben Davis over Zionsville in the final.
Class 5A, Sectional 7. Can anyone knock of Center Grove in this sectional? Not this year. Center Grove moves on again.
Class 5A, Sectional 8. Weakest 5A Sectional. The winner here goes no further. Floyd Central takes it.

Sectional 1 - The Duneland Athletic Conference sectional offers some interesting match ups, from the first game until the championship tilt. Conference champion Valparaiso should best non-league opponent East Chicago Central in the opener to face the winner of the highly competitive Chesterton-Merrillville winner. These two teams met last weekend with the Pirates of Merrillville squeaking out a 32-29 win at Chesterton. Look for another close game here with the winner getting the conference champs in the second round. Munster, the only other non-Duneland Conference team in the sectional, could be the wild card in the other bracket. With the top three teams in the league battling it out in the other bracket, the Mustangs could find themselves in the championship game. They have a first week win over their first round opponent Lake Central and then would face the winner of the Crown Point-Portage game. In the end however, look for Valparaiso to continue it's dominance in the this area.
Sectional 2 – Proponents of seeding have to love this sectional with the two favorites, Mishawaka and Penn, in different brackets. Both teams should sail through this relatively weak sectional as several traditionally strong programs are down this year. If all goes as it should, the Kingsmen and Cavemen should meet again in a rematch of a game won by Mishawaka, 21-14, at Penn on October 1. Look for Penn to turn the tables in this one and claim another sectional title.
Sectional 3 – The first thing to remember when reviewing this sectional is that Kokomo plays in the North Central Conference and Snider plays in the Summit Athletic Conference. This is a rematch of last years first round sectional match up won by Snider 42-7 and quite honestly was not that close. Snider's challenge will be with their traditional rival from Homestead. The Spartans should have no trouble advancing to the championship game where the two will meet again for the title. Snider is not as strong as normal but still has enough to win this sectional.
Sectional 4 – Carmel enters this sectional as the favorite in this sectional dominated by teams from the Hoosier Crossroads Conference. The Greyhounds will most likely face both co-champions on their path to the championship game. Carmel should survive both Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern in games that will both be highly competitive.
Sectional 5 – The Warriors of Warren Central could be tested early as they face a much improved Lawrence Central team in the opener. Coach Hart must get his group refocused after last weeks narrow victory over Center Grove. If they can get by the Bears in the opener, which they should, only a scrappy Southport team will stand in the way of yet another sectional title for the team that MaxPreps ranks as the fourth best dynasty of the last decade.
Sectional 6 – This may be the best balanced sectional in this class. The fireworks begin in the first round with some very exciting match ups. Pike and Ben Davis are matched up in the first round again with the Red Devils hoping for a better showing than the 20 point loss two years ago. Dark horse Zionsville will play MIC member Terre Haute North, who may surprise in this game, on the back half of this bracket. If Zionsville can get around the Patriots, another MIC opponent, Ben Davis, will most likely await. The winner will most likely get the winner of the rematch between Brownsburg and Avon in the championship game. I like Zionsville to emerge after some very hard fought contests.
Sectional 7 – The Columbus East-Center Grove first round match up highlights this very good sectional. When Bloomington South is considered the weakest team in here, you know it is going to be a tough road for whomever wins this thing. Center Grove, loser to Warren Central on a missed PAT last week, has to be considered the favorite headed in. With all due respect to the other fine teams in here, and there are several who could pull this off, it all comes down to conference. The MIC is the best conference in the state and surely one of the best in the country. That alone will propel the Trojans to the championship.
Sectional 8 – The forgotten sectional. Historically this sectional is not that strong since Reitz dropped to 4A and the winner always plays the winner of Sectional 7. For instance, Bedford-North Lawrence could be labeled as one of the favorites, yet they lost to Bloomington North, who does not appear to have a chance in Sectional 7. I will go with a Floyd Central-Bedford North Lawrence rematch with the Stars of Bedford turning the tables and winning the championship.
