It's that time of year again. It is hoop time in Indiana. I had someone come up to me the other day and ask me why I was so into basketball. They said they could not stand it. They ask what it was that made me like it so much. Hundreds of fans in a gym on a Friday night. Everyone cheering on their team in a big game. Coaches trying to come up with a play to win a game. Players playing as hard as they can to beat the team across town. Cheerleaders cheering on the team. The mascot getting the fans all fired up. So my question for you is what is it that makes you a fan?

Sorry southside, HS football is my drug of choice, but I do appreciate the passion other people have for their sport.

Basketball is just something to do between football seasons, or so I was told when I was in school.

the best part of high school basketball is everything. the fans, the teams, the rivalries, the last second shot to win. it is almost like a haze of excitement comes over everyone. the athletes aren't playing for money or shoe contracts. they are playing for bragging rights, sportsmanship and most inportant of all to have fun. fans enjoy this type of atomosphere.

There's such thing as sportsmanship? Listen to the fans yell "Hey, you suck!" during Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part 2". And I know for a fact they do that during football games

After the THS football game, our principal gave our school a speech on sportsmanship because of how the fans acted during the BD game the week before (which really wasn't that bad, it was about as bad as a typical hyped up game, but hey)...
At this point, stuff like that is so common complaining about it won't do much good anymore. Someone apparently chanted "Pass the ISTEP" in the Arlington-LN game, but I dunno since I wasn't there.
And I'll admit, shoving it down your opponent's throat is fun, and I'll even encourage some of it, but not to the extent where it crosses the line and you're wondering if the chanting team will get penalized for it...

I hate to throw water on the fire but my opinion of Hoosier Hysteria has suffered in the past 5-6 years. I used to get into the tournement every year. Loved to watch the regionals at the Ft Wayne Memorial Coliseum and also the Semi-State. You could always count on the Final 4 to be televised State-wide. You were lucky if you could get a ticket to either MSA or The Dome to watch it live. They were always a sellout. Then Class Basketball Now I couldn't tell you a state champion from the past 5 years. I would guess the team that Greg Odem played on probably won it this year. But without TV coverage anymore I don't know for sure. I also remember that The team Luke Zeller played on won it on a last second half court shot. Hoosier Hysteria used to be great. Now its just like any other basketball state tournement. To many teams playing in front of small crowds and empty seats I miss Indiana HS basketball
