As the season winds down and the sectional draw upcoming on Sunday evening, its time to think ahead to the state tournament. For the first time in quite awhile, all 4 classes are wide open in regards to state champions and winners. Being from Southeastern Indiana this is the week and when it all comes down to Earth. Enjoy part 1 of this series of end of the season previews of each sectional as I will breakdown the teams of the South Decatur,Switzerland County, and South Dearborn Sectionals. An East Central preview will be upcoming.
Jac-Cen-Del- The Eagles under head coach David Bradshaw once again find themselves as the favorites in Sectional 58. This ball club has been on a roll all season long racking up several wins and only 3 losses. They have looked impressive in several ballgames most notably against Batesville(RCT Title Game) and Greensburg. Leading the Eagles this season has been the Gehl brothers Brandon and Matt. They have a solid supporting cast however including Tucker Brown,Justin Huff,Andrew Wagner, and Blake Sutton. However the 1st place team in the ORVC is hurting right now as both Gehl brothers have seen injuries in the past couple weeks still seeing Matt Gehl on the sidelines. Matt will be back though very soon and the Eagles look to continue their overall dominance on the basketball floor.
Oldenburg Acadmey- First year head coach Matt Maple enters the final stretch of the season with another Twisters losing record. A program still very young, this team continues to improve record wise and within a few years expect a nice ball club. As of right now though, still very few wins and definite underdogs in this sectional.
Rising Sun- Brian Graham's group suffered heavily this year with 80% of last year's scoring gone. This ball club has scrounged up three victories(Trinity Lutheran,Oldenburg, and Milan) this season as this team rebuilds. Leading the pack this year has been 6'9 big man Zeph Vaughn who's presence will need to be felt come sectional time.
Shawe- The defending Sectional 58 champs under Jerry Bomholt have saw a promising second half of the season and hovering a game or two above .500 this season. Despite losing starts Drew Kring and Ben Schafer, this club has seen new leadership under Todd Ungru,Nick Hall, and Alex Murphy. Lookout for this ball club, a team with a strong zone defense will slow the tempo down and make any opponent play Hilltopper basketball.
South Decatur-A rebuilding year is what first year head coach Tom Black sees this season with the Cougars. Playing a tough schedule and tough conference schedule, Black's Cougars have matured throughout the season as the winning belief has been installed for the final stretch. Cougars in sectional time will lean on shooters Tyler Mote and John Evans but a scrappy ballcub makes South Decatur a darkhorse in Sectional 58.
Sectional Pick-The Jac-Cen-Del Eagles
